Measure distances between edges or vertices

Measure distances between edges or vertices How to measure the distance between any edge or vertice in both 2D and 3D using the Measure tool Amritha Krishnan

You can use the Measure tool in both Plan views and 3D views to measure distances between edges and vertices.

Click on the Measure tool.

Click on the start point of measure. On moving the mouse, a running dimension appears. The dimension line snaps to edges and vertices.

Click again on a snapped edge or vertex to finish measuring, or press the Escape key. Measurements are displayed with extension lines where required.

If the measuring line snaps to an axis, it shows you the color of the axis snapped to. Similarly, extensions of an edge are indicated in magenta.

Measuring in plan views

  • Measuring between any 2 parallel sides of a room in plan view always shows you the perpendicular distance between the 2 sides.

  • Measuring between any 2 non-parallel sides of a room in plan view shows you the perpendicular distance from the point of measure start to the edge measured to.

  • Measurements done in plan views are not affected by 3D height differences.

  • You can also measure the distance between any 2 points on the ground.

Measuring in 3D views

  • Measuring between 2 parallel edges at different elevations in 3D shows you both the horizontal and the vertical perpendicular distance between them. If the horizontal distance between them is 0, then the measure shows only the vertical distance between them.

  • Measuring between any 2 non-parallel edges shows the perpendicular distance from the point of measure starts to the edge measured to, along with the vertical distance between them.
