Creating walls and slabs automatically from a massing model using Create Building How to create a detailed BIM model, set custom wall thicknesses, set slab thickness and plinth height for a project

To create a BIM model from a massing model, click on the Create Building button.

All the vertical faces of the masses are converted into walls of 200 mm thickness, and all the horizontal faces are converted into slabs of 150 mm thickness. This process is completely automatic, and can be done in all projects created in the BIM mode.

Please note that all actions are disabled while Create Building is processing, to ensure a clean result. A loader at the bottom of the screen indicated the progress of Create Building process.

Default construction

  • All the walls are created with the room edges as their centre lines, with an offset of 100 mm to each side. Walls are generated to the same height as the storey minus 150 mm to accommodate the slab.

  • All slabs are created just below the top of the storey, or the mass, by extruding the mass face down by 150 mm. Slabs are created with a default overhang of 600 mm over the wall.

  • Flooring is created with a 25 mm thickness. It is created on the inside of rooms, and just above the lower face of the storey or mass.

Default values are updated for the different wall types as:

  • Internal walls: 100mm
  • External walls: 200mm
  • Parapets: 25mm

Setting custom construction for internal, external and parapet walls

Create buildings of all types, defining custom construction properties for walls. You can set external, internal and parapet walls to be of a specific type in Project Properties. Wall thickness is dependent on wall type. Wall types include:

Once set, click on Create Building and walls are generated with thickness and material based on type. This allows you to customise your walls based on building type. For example, you may use wood stud walls in residences, or you can use glass curtain walls externally and masonry walls internally in an office building. 

You can change the type of specific walls, for example concrete lift cores, by selecting the walls and changing the type in Object Properties. Wall thickness is updated based on the type. You can manually overwrite it using the Move tool or using Object Properties. BoQ is updated automatically by material as well.

Setting slab thickness

You can change the dimensions of all slabs from one location in Project Properties.

Wall heights of a room are parametrically linked to slab thickness, as well as storey height. Increasing or decreasing slab thickness from its Object Properties (or centrally, from Project Properties) will update the height of all the linked walls accordingly.


On Create Building, the slab for Storey 1 is created with the properties of Plinth. Plinth height can be controlled separately from slab thickness in Project Properties. Note that the plinth slab can only be created on Storey 1.

If basements are created, the Storey 1 slab is converted to a regular slab (and has the thickness of regular slabs). Replicating any BIM rooms from an upper storey downward to storey 1 would also automatically generate a plinth below the replicated room.

Plinth is not created for spaces or masses tagged as Site, Deck, Road, Ground and Court. Vertical Move is enabled on these masses, as well as all slabs, so that they can be placed correctly with respect to the building’s plinth.
