Every space you draw in Snaptrude has a Space Type. The type tells Snaptrude what kind of space it is (a room, a program block, a balcony, a road, an envelope and so on). It sets the space's default Area Type, which decides whether the space counts toward net, gross or excluded area. It also sets how opaque the space looks on the canvas. Use Space Types to keep area totals correct and to control how different kinds of space read across the whole project.
Space Types and labels
Space Types replaced Smart Labels. A space's label is just its name: typing "Balcony" or a department name into the label doesn't change how the space behaves. Set the behaviour with the Space Type instead.
Program Block replaces the old department objects. To group spaces by department, give the space a Department tag. Every project includes the Department tag category by default.
Projects that used department objects were migrated automatically. Each department became a Program Block with a matching Department tag.
Spaces created from Program Mode start as the Room type.
Space Type defaults
Each Space Type comes with a default Area Type and a default opacity:
Space Type | Default opacity | Default Area Type |
Room | 100% | Net |
Program Block | 30% | Net |
Envelope | 30% | Excluded |
Balcony | 100% | Net |
Deck | 100% | Net |
Pool | 100% | Net |
Road | 100% | Excluded |
Garden | 100% | Excluded |
Walkway | 100% | Excluded |
Program Block and Envelope are 30% opaque by default. That way you can trace PDF, image and CAD underlays through them and show massing as translucent volumes in 3D.
Change a space's Space Type
Select one or more spaces on the canvas.
In the right panel, open the Properties tab and find the Space Type dropdown.
Choose the type you want.
A space takes on the defaults of its new type, including its Area Type and opacity. The Space Type can also change other defaults, such as the space's height and material. Height Lock is on by default for every Space Type. To check which type each space has, switch the canvas color mode to Texture.
Tip: To select every space of one type, right-click on the canvas and use filter select By Object, which lists Space Types. To select spaces that match one you already have selected, right-click it and choose Same Type.
Set a space's Area Type
Area Type controls how a space's area is counted. There are three values: Net, Gross and Excluded. Each Space Type sets a default, and you can override it for any space.
Select the space.
In the Properties tab of the right panel, open the Area Type dropdown.
Choose Net, Gross or Excluded.
You can also set the Area Type in Program Mode. The program data sheet has an Area Type column with a dropdown for each space. This is a quick way to reassign spaces that came in as Room but should be counted another way.
Excluded spaces don't add to your net or gross totals. To review them, open the Areas tab in the right panel and switch the area dropdown (set to Carpet Area by default) to Excluded Area. You can also filter the Areas tab by type.
Change the opacity of a Space Type
Opacity belongs to the Space Type, not to individual spaces. When you change it, every space of that type in the project updates. The value is saved with the project and synced live to everyone working on it.
Select any space of the type you want to change.
In the Properties tab of the right panel, find the Opacity slider in the Space Type properties.
Drag the slider. Every space of that type in the project updates.
Note: You can't set opacity on a single space. To make one space look different from others of its type, give it a different Space Type.
Use the Envelope Space Type
Envelope is the Space Type for buildable envelopes and massing volumes. Its default Area Type is Excluded, so envelope area doesn't inflate your net or gross totals. Its default opacity is 30%, so you can see and work with the spaces inside it.
Buildable envelopes and massing volumes generated by Snaptrude's AI tools are assigned the Envelope type automatically.
In Present Mode, Envelope has its own category in the view style settings, so you can style it separately from other space categories.
Running Sketch to BIM on an Envelope creates the standard BIM set: flooring, walls, floor slabs and roofs. Rules specific to envelopes aren't supported.
Combine Space Type opacity with Present Mode view styles
Opacity works at two separate levels, and they combine:
Space Type opacity is set in the Properties panel. It applies to every space of that type across the project.
View style opacity is set per view in Present Mode. It changes how a category looks in that view only, on top of the Space Type opacity.
To change fills for a presentation without affecting the model, adjust the view style settings in Present Mode and leave the Space Type opacity as it is.
