Move-in Snaptrude is parametric. Since walls are shared by adjoining rooms, rooms are parametrically linked to their neighbours. Moving an edge will simultaneously increase the width of one room, and reduce the width of its neighbour. Similarly, moving a vertex will change the shape of all the rooms that share the corner.

If a room partially shares an edge with another, it is possible to move just that shared portion. Additional perpendicular walls will be auto-created, extending the room without destroying its geometric integrity. Simultaneously, some walls may be shortened or completely removed in the adjacent room to accommodate the change.

This gives you a lot of control while drawing and editing. For example, when multiple spaces open out into one room, you can differentially detail the access of each space from the main room. Some may be recessed from the main room, whereas others may open directly into it, and yet others may be accessed through an extended foyer or corridor.

Please note that the parametric link between rooms does not directly apply to copied rooms, since each copy tends to have different boundary conditions with common rooms.

Limits on Moving walls and corners

Limits are set on Move edge and Move vertex, so that rooms do not collapse into themselves, and do not criss cross. This limit, called the Length Constraint, is set to 10mm by default. If you input a dimension that would cause the room to collapse, or delete a neighbouring room, the input is highlighted in red as an error and is not processed. You can override the default value in Project Properties.

How to use the Move tool

To edit a room shape and size, click on the Move tool.

Double click on an edge or vertex that you want to move. A cyan indicator shows that the edge or vertex is selected to be edited.

Move the mouse to start moving the object. Coloured extension lines are shown when the movement is parallel to an axis, or an edge.

Click again to place the edge or vertex in a new location, or enter a numerical distance for the move. You can place the edge or vertex accurately by snapping to an edge or vertex of another object. The snap indicator is yellow.

Colored indicators of vertex, edge or face

  • Cyan: Selected object

  • Yellow: Object that is snapped to another

  • Grey: Non-editable, but can be selected as a grip point for the move

Colours of reference/ extension lines:

  • Red, Green, Blue: Parallel to the axes

  • Black: Edge movement perpendicular to itself

  • Magenta: aligned to its own edge or edge of another mass, also an extension of the edge

  • Violet: orthogonal/ perpendicular to the vertex of same or another mass

Editing copied rooms 

Parametric edits just got even more powerful! Edits on rooms neighbouring copied rooms (say corridors in a hotel or apartment floor plate) now reflect the edits on all the copies, not just the original one. This means that multiple changes to one space can be achieved by changing just one unit. To help you keep track of all simultaneous changes, we now highlight all copies of the room being edited in green.
