Working with Departments

Updated over a week ago

In this guide, you'll learn how to create, edit, and manage departments to better structure your design and improve clarity across your project.

About Departments

Departments group related spaces together. In Design mode, department objects appear on the left side (of the blue axis), while individual spaces are shown on the right. This layout helps you first plan department-level adjacencies, then arrange the spaces within each department.

Follow the sections below to learn how to create and edit departments.

Creating Departments

There are two methods by which departments can be created:

1. In Program Mode

When a program is created using the AI Program Creator, copy-paste, the '@Interpret' command, or by importing an RFP, departments are automatically generated. You can also manually assign departments by entering the department name next to each space label. (See the Direct Program Entry article for details.)

2. In Design Mode

Step 1: On the design canvas, draw a space using one of the draw tools, assign its label.

Step 2: To create the space as a new department, use the Department dropdown and ensure the space label matches the department name. The label and the name in Object Properties must be identical for it to function as a department object.

Step 3: Once the New Department is created, assign it to that same space to convert that space to a department level object.

Editing Departments

There are two ways of editing department name and color:

1. Directly from the Object Properties Panel: Adjust existing ones by using the Configure button. Relabel or change the color code with the slider or by entering a hex value, then click Apply.

2. From the Program mode: Open the program and edit the department name and color from the table directly.

Pro-tip: Use Filter selection to select all 'Departments' within the project.
