Doors and Windows

Place, flip, resize, move and copy doors and windows, and use Duplicate Family to make one element different from the rest.

Doors and windows in Snaptrude are parametric BIM objects that sit in a wall and cut their own opening. Each one belongs to a family, so you can edit a door or window type once and every matching element in the project updates. Use this article to place, flip, resize, move and copy doors and windows, and to give one element its own family when it needs to be different.

Before you start

  • Doors and windows are hosted by walls. You need walls in the model, either drawn directly in BIM Mode or generated from spaces with Sketch to BIM.

  • Doors and windows are BIM objects, so work in BIM Mode.

  • BIM Mode is available on the Pro, Organization and Enterprise plans.

Place a door or window

  1. In BIM Mode, click Doors or Windows on the vertical toolbar at the right edge of the canvas, or press D for doors or W for windows. The Doors or Windows library pop-up opens.

  2. Use the category filters to narrow the list, then scroll to the door or window you want.

  3. Click its thumbnail to pick it up.

  4. Hover over a wall in 2D or 3D and click to place it.

  5. To place it precisely, type the distance from the nearest edge of the wall while placing.

Tip: In 2D, you can set the opening direction before you click by hovering the cursor on the side you want the door to open towards.

Flip a door or window

You can change which way a door or window opens after you place it.

  1. Select the door or window.

  2. Use the flip controls on the canvas to change which way it opens.

Doors and windows show plan symbols in 2D, so you can check the opening direction in plan.

Change a door or window's size and parameters

  1. Select the door or window.

  2. In the Properties panel, change values such as Height and Width. The main controls are shown first; open the Advanced sections for the rest.

  3. The geometry updates as you edit.

Note: Doors and windows use type parameters, like families in Revit. Changing a parameter updates every door or window of the same family in the project. Each element keeps its own position in its wall.

Make one door or window different

If you need to change a single door or window without affecting the others, give it its own family first.

  1. Select the door or window.

  2. Click Duplicate Family.

  3. Choose whether to keep the new family in the project or save it to your library.

  4. Edit its parameters. Only elements of the new family change.

Move a door or window

  1. Select the door or window.

  2. Press M to use the Move tool, or click an edge or vertex and drag.

  3. Optionally, type a distance to move it by an exact amount.

Copy a door or window

  1. Select the door or window.

  2. Press C to open the Copy/Array tool, or hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while using the Move tool.

  3. Click or type a distance to place the copy along the wall.

Note: Like other BIM objects, a copied door or window can be an instance or unique. Instances stay in the same family as the original, so editing one later updates them all. To break a copy away from its family, use Duplicate Family.

Check or change a door or window's story

Doors and windows belong to the story they sit on. To see or change it, select the element and use the Story field in the Properties panel.

Delete a door or window

Select it and press Delete.

Doors and windows in older projects

Old-style doors and windows from earlier projects are not supported and don't appear in the doors and windows sections of team Libraries. To find them, open the Families section of your Libraries and filter by category.

Tips

  • Team Libraries (Organization and Enterprise plans) have Doors and Windows tabs with category filters, so your team's standard types are easy to reuse across projects.

  • You can upload your own door and window 3D files to your library.

  • Doors and windows cut their openings automatically. If a door or window comes from your team library and has a cost assigned there, the opening is deducted in the project's quantities and cost.
