Export Snaptrude to Revit

Export your Snaptrude model to Revit directly or as a .trude file via Snaptrude Manager, and see how elements, tags and parameters map.

Send your Snaptrude model to Revit for detailing and documentation. You can use Direct Revit Export, or export a .trude file and bring it into a new or existing Revit project with Snaptrude Manager, the Snaptrude plugin for Revit. Walls, floors, doors, windows, stairs, rooms and your custom data come across as native Revit elements and parameters.

Before you start

  • Revit export is available on the Pro, Organization and Enterprise plans. It isn't included on Free or Starter.

  • Install Snaptrude Manager in Revit and keep it up to date. Both export methods need it. When an update is available, Snaptrude Manager prompts you inside Revit when you open it. Choose Update, then Install Update. Close all Revit windows before installing. You don't need to uninstall the old version first.

  • Convert massing to BIM first if you want walls, floors and openings in Revit. Use Sketch to BIM in BIM Mode.

  • Objects on hidden layers are left out of exports. Show any layers you want to include before you export.

Method

Use it when

Direct Revit Export

You want a Revit file (.rvt) straight from Snaptrude, or want to update an existing Revit model.

.trude file + Snaptrude Manager, new Revit project

You modelled from scratch in Snaptrude and want to start a Revit project from it.

.trude file + Snaptrude Manager, existing Revit project

You imported a Revit model into Snaptrude, edited it, and want to reconcile those edits back into the original Revit file.

Export directly to a Revit file

  1. Open your project in Snaptrude.

  2. Click the project name at the top left, then choose Export > Model/Drawing.

  3. In File type, choose Revit model (.rvt).

  4. Select Begin Export and wait for the export to finish.

Note: Direct Revit Export runs on Autodesk cloud services (APS). If Autodesk has an outage, it may be unavailable until the service is back.

Export to a new Revit project with Snaptrude Manager

  1. In Snaptrude, click the project name, then choose Export > Model/Drawing.

  2. In File type, choose Revit Export (.trude).

  3. Rename the file in File name if you want to, then select Begin Export. Snaptrude downloads a .trude file.

  4. In Revit, start a new project.

  5. Open Snaptrude Manager and select Import to Revit.

  6. Find the downloaded .trude file and select Open.

  7. Choose whether to import with or without room labels. Snaptrude Manager builds the model in Revit.

Note: When you import into a new Revit project, the export button in Snaptrude Manager is greyed out. This is expected.

Reconcile edits back to an existing Revit project

Use this when your Snaptrude project started as a Revit import.

  1. Make your edits in Snaptrude.

  2. Click the project name, choose Export > Model/Drawing, and set File type to Revit Export (.trude).

  3. Select Begin Export to download the .trude file.

  4. In Revit, open the original project you imported from.

  5. Open Snaptrude Manager and select Import to Revit.

  6. Find the .trude file and select Open. Snaptrude Manager reconciles the changes, and your Snaptrude edits appear in the Revit file.

Arc (curved) walls

Curved walls

Parametric floors with curved boundaries

Floors with curved boundaries

Staircases (straight, dog-legged, open-well, L-shaped, square)

Cast-in-place stairs with editable riser height, tread depth, base level, base offset and similar parameters

Space labels (when you import with room labels)

Room tags

Tag values on Spaces or Flooring

Room parameters, one per Tag Category

Custom parameters

Take your data into Revit schedules

Data you add in Snaptrude travels with the model, so you can drive Revit schedules, filters and tags from it.

  • Tags: Each Tag Category becomes a Room parameter, and each space's (or flooring's) tag value fills it in. Use this for data like Phase, Wing or Option. Objects whose tag is set to Default export with an empty value. Only values you assigned are written.

  • Custom parameters: Custom parameters export as Revit shared parameters.

Tag values come across whether you export into a new or an existing Revit project.

Troubleshooting

  • "An export is already in progress": Only one Revit, DWG, IFC or PDF export runs at a time. Wait for the current export to finish, then try again.

  • Export fails: The export dialog closes and shows the reason. Fix the issue it names and export again.

  • Curved floors or custom parameters are missing in Revit: Update Snaptrude Manager to the latest version, then import again.

  • Some objects are missing: Check whether they sit on a hidden layer in Snaptrude.

  • Revit options aren't in the File type list: Check your plan. Revit export needs Pro, Organization or Enterprise.
