Push/Pull, Edit and Edit Length

Reshape objects with Push-pull in 3D and Edit in 2D, press J for edges and vertices, and set exact sizes with Edit Length.

Push/Pull and Edit reshape objects by moving their faces, edges and vertices. It's one tool, Edit (P) in the top toolbar: in 3D it pushes and pulls faces, and in 2D it edits edges and vertices. It works on spaces, masses, walls, Floor Slabs, Flooring, ceilings, beams and columns, in both Design Mode and BIM Mode. Use Edit Length when you need an edge or object at an exact size.

Push or pull a face in 3D

  1. Switch to the 3D view.

  2. Select Edit in the top toolbar, or press P.

  3. Hover over the face you want to move and click it.

  4. Move the cursor to push the face in or pull it out.

  5. To set an exact distance, type a value in the on-canvas input and press Enter.

Tip: In imperial projects you can type feet and inches together in a single field. The same on-canvas input is used by Draw, Move, Rotate and Edit.

Tip: You can also find this tool by typing Move face in the Search tools & actions box at the bottom centre of the screen.

Push-pull to the object's own faces

While you push or pull a face, you can align it to the other faces of the same object. Use this to line a face up with another part of the same space or mass.

Push-pull site geometry

Push-pull also works on site geometry, so you can adjust site objects the same way you adjust building objects.

Push-pull BIM objects

In BIM Mode, push and pull walls, Floor Slabs, beams, columns and other BIM objects the same way. For example, you can use Push-pull to create an inclined wall.

Note: On a BIM object with construction layers, push-pulling a side face changes only the structure layer (split proportionally if there are several structure layers). Editing an edge or vertex sets the structure layer to Variable.

Edit an edge or vertex in 3D

In 3D, Push-pull edits faces by default. Switch to edge and vertex editing with J.

  1. With the Edit tool active in 3D, hover near the edge or vertex you want to move. The tooltip Press J to edit edge / vertex appears.

  2. Press J.

  3. Click the edge or vertex and move it to its new position, or type a distance and press Enter.

Note: J applies only to 3D. In 2D, the Edit tool works directly on edges and vertices.

Edit edges and vertices in 2D

  1. Switch to the 2D view.

  2. Select Edit in the top toolbar, or press P.

  3. Hover over the edge or vertex you want to change and click it.

  4. Move it to its new position, or type a distance and press Enter.

In BIM Mode this is a quick way to change the length or width of a wall, Floor Slab or other BIM object.

Note: Spaces that share an edge stay connected. When you move a shared edge, both spaces change. BIM objects are not connected this way, so editing one doesn't change its neighbours.

Set an exact length with Edit Length

Edit Length sets an edge or object to a precise dimension. It works on rectangles, triangles, circles, arcs and polygons.

  1. Select Edit Length in the top toolbar, next to Edit.

  2. Click the edge you want to change. A yellow arrow shows which direction the edge will grow or shrink.

  3. To change the direction, click the yellow arrow to flip it.

  4. Type the length you want in the on-canvas input and press Enter. The shape updates straight away.

Note: If you type an invalid value, Edit Length keeps working. Type a valid value and press Enter; you don't need to restart the tool.

Tips

  • If a rectangular space has its area locked (the lock icon next to Footprint Area in the Properties panel), Push-pull and Edit Length preserve its area. Vertex edits aren't supported on area-locked spaces.

  • Spaces you draw start with their height locked to the story height. Changing the height with Push-pull unlocks it automatically.

  • Measuring Tape dimensions refresh when you release the mouse after a push-pull, not while you drag.
