Use the Rotate tool to turn spaces, masses, BIM objects, furniture, topography and imported files to any angle around an axis you pick. For quick right-angle turns, press the Spacebar. To mirror an object, use Flip X or Flip Z.
Rotate an object with the Rotate tool
Select the object or objects you want to rotate. If objects overlap, press
Tabto cycle through them (Shift+Tabgoes back) until the one you want is selected.Press
Q, or click Rotate in the top toolbar, to start the Rotate tool.Hover over an edge, vertex or face of the object. Snap points highlight as you hover (midpoints show in a different colour).
Click a first point, then click a second point to set the line of rotation. A protractor appears on the canvas.
Move the cursor to the angle you want, or type an exact angle in the on-canvas input.
Rotation works the same way in 2D and 3D views, and in both Design Mode and BIM Mode.
Tip: You can also start the Rotate tool first and then select what to rotate. Tool-first selection with Tab works for Rotate, Move and Copy.
Tip: Hold Shift while rotating to lock the rotation to 90-degree steps.
Rotate around a reference point
Move, Copy and Rotate can all use a reference point that you pick on the canvas, such as a vertex or edge midpoint, so you can rotate the selection around a precise point. While rotating, objects also snap to nearby objects for precision.
Rotate around a different axis
The protractor is colour-coded by the axis it rotates around: red for X, blue for Y and green for Z (vertical).
Start the Rotate tool with the object selected.
Hover over a different face of the object, for example the vertical side face of a column. The protractor changes colour to show the new axis.
Pick your two points and set the angle as usual.
Note: Spaces and walls rotate only around the vertical (green) axis. Other objects, such as columns, can also rotate around the horizontal axes.
Rotate several objects together
Select all the objects, for example with a marquee selection.
Press
Qand rotate as above. The whole selection turns as one group, keeping the objects' positions relative to each other.
Rotate 90 degrees quickly
Quick rotate turns your selection 90 degrees clockwise in one keystroke, without picking points or typing an angle.
Select one or more objects, or start placing an object that is attached to your cursor.
Press the
Spacebar. Each press turns the selection a further 90 degrees clockwise.
You can also right-click the selection and choose Rotate 90° from the Right-click menu.
A single object rotates about its own pivot.
A multi-selection rotates about the combined centroid of all the selected objects.
With nothing selected, the
Spacebarreturns you to the Select tool instead.
Note: Quick rotate does not work on doors, windows, voids or locked objects. Unlock a locked object before rotating it. For doors and windows, use the Rotate tool or the object's own controls.
Control angle snapping
Rotation snaps to the angle increment set under Settings (gear icon, bottom-left) > All Snaps > Angle (for example 5°). Change the value there for precise angular control, or turn angle snap off to rotate freely.
Flip (mirror) an object
Flipping mirrors an object along an axis. To keep the original and create a mirrored copy, copy the object first.
Optional: to keep the original, copy the object with the Copy/Array tool (
C) and select the copy.Right-click the object.
Choose Flip X or Flip Z, depending on the direction you want to mirror it.
You can also find Flip by typing Mirror in the Search tools & actions box at the bottom of the screen.
Tip: With the object selected, the shortcuts X (Flip X) and Z (Flip Z) mirror it without opening the Right-click menu.
Troubleshooting
The Spacebar doesn't rotate my door or window. Quick rotate excludes doors, windows, voids and locked objects. Unlock the object, or use the Rotate tool or the object's own controls.
The space or wall won't tilt. Spaces and walls can only rotate around the vertical axis.
The wrong object rotates when objects overlap. Press
Tabto cycle through overlapping objects before you rotate. The angle keeps jumping. Angle snap is on. Turn it off or change its value under Settings (gear icon, bottom-left) > All Snaps.
Dimension lines after rotating. Dimension lines attached to an object stay attached and update when you rotate it.
