Materials control how walls, slabs, spaces and other objects look in 3D. Use the Materials library to apply a material to a whole object or to a single face, pick up a material that is already in the model, remove it, or adjust how its texture is scaled, positioned and coloured.
Before you start
The Materials tool is on the vertical toolbar along the right edge of the canvas in both Design Mode and BIM Mode. Press
Bto open it.Construction layers and finish layers on walls and slabs belong to BIM Mode, which is available on the Pro, Organization and Enterprise plans.
Materials are shared across the whole project. If you use Design Proposals, a material you add or edit is available in every proposal.
Apply a material to an object
You can apply materials to spaces, walls, Floor Slabs, Flooring, beams, columns and masses.
Click Materials on the right-edge toolbar of the canvas, or press
B.Browse the categories, or type in the search bar to find a material.
Click the material's thumbnail to select it.
Click the object, or each of the objects, you want to apply it to.
Note: On walls, Floor Slabs and other objects with construction layers, applying a material to the whole object adds two finish layers to its construction layers.
Note: Materials on spaces only show when the model is coloured by texture. If you apply a material to a space and don't see it, check that the colour mode is set to Texture.
Apply a material to a single face
Use this to finish one side of a wall or the top of a slab without changing the rest of the object.
Open the Materials library (
B).Turn on the Material by Face toggle.
Click the material you want.
Click the face you want to apply it to.
Note: Applying a material to a single face adds one finish layer on that side of the object.
Tip: To use different materials on parts of the same face, such as tiling up to a set height, divide the face first with the Split Face tool, then apply a material to each part with Material by Face.
Tip: Use Material by Face to apply materials to doors, windows and furniture.
Pick a material from the model
The Eyedropper copies a material that is already in your model, so you don't have to search the library for it.
Open the Materials library (
B).Click the Eyedropper tool.
Click an object that already has the material you want.
Click the object you want to apply the material to.
Remove a material
Open the Materials library (
B).Click the Remove Material icon.
Click the object you want to remove the material from.
Duplicate a material
Duplicate a material when you want a variation, for example a different scale or colour overlay, without changing the original.
In the Materials library, click the material you want to copy.
Click Copy Material.
Edit a material
You edit a material in the project library and see in real time how it looks on the model, so you can fine-tune it as you go.
In the Materials library, select the material.
Click Edit Material.
Adjust any of these properties:
Opacity: from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque).
uScale and vScale: the size of the texture in the u and v directions.
uOffset and vOffset: where the texture starts on the surface in the u and v directions.
Angle: rotates the texture.
Overlay: adds a colour tint. Pick a colour with the colour picker or type an RGB value, such as RGB (250, 250, 250).
Click Save Edits.
Materials in a team library
On the Organization and Enterprise plans, if your team keeps materials in a team library, you can edit, duplicate and delete them directly in the library.
