Navigating the Canvas: Pan, Orbit, Zoom and 2D/3D

How to orbit, pan and zoom in Snaptrude, use Zoom Window, Zoom to Selection and Zoom Extents, arrow-key navigation, and switch 2D/3D.

Orbit, pan and zoom let you move around your model in Design Mode and BIM Mode. Use the zoom commands to frame exactly what you want to see, the arrow keys for small camera moves, and Go to 3D to switch between plan views and 3D.

Orbit around your model

Orbit rotates the camera a full 360 degrees around a single pivot point, so you can look at the model from any side.

  1. Switch to 3D if you are in a plan view (see Switch between 2D and 3D below).

  2. Drag on the canvas to rotate the view around the model.

Pan across the canvas

Panning slides the view sideways without changing the angle or zoom level. The view follows your mouse in a straight line, which makes small adjustments predictable.

  1. Hold the right mouse button on the canvas.

  2. Drag in the direction you want the view to move.

  3. Release the mouse button when the area you want is in view.

You can also use the Pan control at the bottom right of the canvas.

Zoom in and out

Scroll the mouse wheel forward to zoom in, or backward to zoom out.

Note: Double-clicking the mouse wheel does not zoom to extents. Use Zoom Extents instead, described below.

Frame a specific area with Zoom Window

Use Zoom Window when you want to fill the screen with one part of the model, such as a single room or a corner of the site.

  1. Press Shift + W to start Zoom Window.

  2. Draw a rectangle around the area you want to see.

  3. The view zooms to fit that rectangle.

When you start Zoom Window with the shortcut, it stays active so you can frame several areas in a row. If you start it from its button instead, clicking the button again turns it off, in the same way as Move and Rotate.

Zoom to the objects you have selected

  1. Select one or more objects, such as spaces, walls or imported drawings.

  2. Press Shift + S for Zoom to Selection.

The view zooms in to fit your selection, which is a quick way to find a small object in a large project.

Tip: If you have just deselected something and want to get back to it, right-click on empty canvas and choose Select Previous. Snaptrude reselects your last selection and moves the camera to it, in both 2D and 3D.

See the whole project with Zoom Extents

Zoom Extents zooms out to fit your project on screen. It keeps the current camera orientation, so if you are looking at the model from the south-east in 3D, you still see it from the south-east after zooming out.

  1. Click Zoom Extents in the bottom bar, or press Shift + Z.

  2. Alternatively, right-click on an empty part of the canvas and choose Zoom Extents.

Tip: If you have hidden objects and want them back, choose Show All from the same right-click menu.

Move the camera with the arrow keys

You can move the camera with the arrow keys on your keyboard as well as with the mouse. This is handy when you want small, controlled moves.

  1. Make sure Arrow-key navigation is turned on in Settings (gear icon, bottom left). It is on by default.

  2. Press the arrow keys to move the camera.

Switch between 2D and 3D

Work in a 2D plan view when you are laying out spaces and drawing precisely, and switch to 3D to check massing, heights and how stories stack.

  1. Click Go to 3D at the bottom right of the canvas, or press Shift + >.

  2. To go back to plan, use the same control again, or open a plan from the Stories tree in the left panel.

When you switch from 3D back to 2D, Snaptrude returns you to the last plan view you were working in, so you do not have to find your story again. Switching between 2D and 3D is fast, and the scene streams in as it loads, which helps with large projects.

Tip: Shadow analysis stays active when you switch between 2D and 3D.

Navigation in Present Mode

Sheets in Present Mode use the same basic mouse controls: scroll the mouse wheel to zoom, and drag with the right or middle mouse button to pan. You can also pick the Hand tool from the toolbar. People with view-only access get a limited toolbar with pan, zoom, a laser pointer and sheet navigation.

Troubleshooting

  • The model has disappeared off screen. Press Shift + Z or click Zoom Extents in the bottom bar.

  • Zoom Window keeps asking me to draw a rectangle. It stays active when started from the shortcut. Exit the tool when you have finished framing.

  • The arrow keys do nothing. Check that Arrow-key navigation is on in Settings (gear icon, bottom left).

  • Objects I expected to see are missing. They may be hidden. Choose Show All from the right-click menu.
